Ride Report – 07/08/2017 – Pine Top Restaurant to Star City Powersports
Excellent post-breakfast ride this morning from Pine Top Restaurant in New Castle to Star City Powersports.
We had a great turn-out for breakfast this morning – perhaps as many as 16 riders. The food and service was great and the place was rocking. After breakfast the group splintered into several factions. Galen, Durwin, Steve and a couple others headed off for some serious dual-sport action, Tim and Terri headed on to WV for a family reunion, while others headed home to attend to their honey-do lists. Under slightly threatening skies, 4 of us (Me, Mark, Seth, & Karl) headed off on the backroads of Craig and Botetourt County with the goal of reaching Star City Powersports and the Yamaha Demo Truck Day event.
It had been a while since we had ventured down Craig’s Creek Road (Rte. 615) and I think we had forgotten what a gem this road is. We were quickly reminded as we settled in to the sweeping curves and tight twisties. This road heads northeasterly and travels through Marshalltown, Oriskany, and Strom before popping out on U.S. 220 near Eagle Rock. Other than these “thriving metropolises,” this road is 100% pure southwestern Virginia Country Road at its finest. The pavement was a little rough in places and there were small patches of gravel wash in the road from recent storms, but we took this in stride. We were jolted to full attention when Mark startled a large Black Bear from along the edge of the road, only to be followed by several deer – one of which seems more interested in joining us than getting out of the road. A large portion of this route parallels Craig Creek, so we were treated to the beautiful view and the cool moist air that follows that bottom land. One great thing about this ride is that we were under tree cover about 90% of the ride. This, along with the opportunity to stop and dip your toes in the water, makes it a perfect route for those hot July days.
The ride from Eagle Rock towards Buchanan along Rte. 43 offered more of the same, with a little more traffic and more rolling hills than tight twisties. Still and awesome road. Mark took us on a little “detour” along Springwood Road (turning just prior to James River High School) and then Mt. Joy Road (Rte 625) before we popped out on to Rt. 11. From there down to Star City was a familiar and leisurely ride. We made it to the dealership to catch the last round of demo rides before lunch.
From Pine Top to Star City Powersports we logged:
Distance: 62.3 miles
Duration: 1 hours, 21 minutes, and 19 seconds
Average Speed: 46.0 mph
Minimum Elevation: 851 feet
Maximum Elevation: 1421 feet
On the peg scraping scale: I give it a 3.5 of out of 5.
